We will never forget the 13th May 2020, when the rest of the world was panicking about COVID we were being told that our 6 year old little boy had an incurable brain tumour and that there was very little that could be done. I remember me and Darren went into shock at first and then we went into survival mode. What can we do to get through this and what can we do to make sure Dylan has the best fighting chance.

On 13th May, our life changed forever, we felt all hope, power and fight was taken away from us and Dylan became a number, just a diagnosis – and it was something we were going to have to come to terms with.

When we asked the consultant what we could do, he replied ‘you are already doing all you can’ and I remember thinking but you have no idea what it is we are doing.

Why are we not going on to have a meeting about how to help Dylan cope with the treatment he was about to start?

As a personal trainer I had a basic understanding of nutrition and having worked with a supplement company in the past I knew the power of fruits and veg and food as a whole and how healing it could be. I knew I needed to do everything I could to keep Dylan’s immune system strong to give him the best fighting chance – and having this attitude we felt like we were taking back some power, it was giving us something positive to do and it gave us the hope we need to get through each day.

Over the course of the next few months I not only had amazing support from a brilliant nurse in America, but I also read every book on nutrition and cancer.

I came to understand that the food we eat affects every cell in our body – and cancer are cells in our body that are misbehaving.

So if I could slow down those cells and feed Dylan all the good foods to help healthy cells grow – he would continue to thrive. Which he did.

I remember being so shocked so many times when we did have to go into the hospital for Dylan’s treatment at the amount of sugar he was offered – after every radio therapy session he was offered a bag of sweets, or a lollypop after his MRI scans, and this to me never made sense. Not only do we know that SUGAR FEEDS CANCER we also know that sugar is one of the worst foods to deplete the immune system. Why was sugar and junk food being offered out to my child, for free at a hospital that was giving him treatment to slow the growth of his disease.

We know that food can’t cure cancer, and for Dylan unfortunately his disease was so aggressive that once it started to grow, we couldn’t do anything to slow it down.

We know changing Dylan’s diet and feeding him so much goodness added months to his life and in those months he was so well.

His blood work came back each week amazing and he had huge amounts of energy and life to carry on living like a normal 6 year old boy.

We are now passionate as a family to support and empower other families that have been given a cancer diagnosis. We want more children to thrive through cancer treatments and we want to help parents feel that there is something they can do to support their child’s health.
